INSTINCT BECOMES MORE 'STRONG
A Swedish scientific study, published in the journal Biochemistry Cell Metabolism confirms what generations of children have learned in watching TV cartoons of Popeye: eating spinach makes it stronger, because this vegetable boosts the action of muscles. The experts at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm have studied a group of young athletes by measuring the amount of oxygen consumed during a training session. So they have given them for three days, a portion of 300 g spinach and have then measured again the oxygen consumed. They found that eating spinach improves muscle function: in fact, the athletes had to train needs less oxygen than usual, a sign of a more efficient cell muscle. This is because spinach are rich in a substance, nitrate, which improves the functioning of mitochondria, the power plants of cells.
